Similarities Between Rock And Blues - 719 Words

This week we learned about many genres of music, some similar some different. The two genres I want to compare and contrast are Rock and Blues. When you hear rock music, you picture electric guitars, amplified sounds, and complex styles of play. But if you take a deeper look you would probably be surprised to learn that rock would not even have existed without simple 12-bar forms, antiphonal textures, or â€Å"walking bass lines† used in much blues music. Though Rock and Blues are distinctly different they have a lot of similarities that most likely go unnoticed. Rock and Blues were developed at almost the same exact time around the late 19th century. Blues originated from African American folk music and like Blues, rock music style can also be†¦show more content†¦In the 1950s, when rock was developed, one of the first groups to drift to it was teenagers, being attracted to its themes of rebellion and non conformity. Certain groups of individuals have sprung up aroun d certain musical styles. For instance, punk, techno, and ethnic music all include some type of subculture that embrace an entire lifestyle. This week I learned a lot about music and the different genres. The first genre I learned about was Motown. The Motown Sound is a style of soul music with original characteristics, including tambourine, drums, bass instrumentation, a distinctive melodical and chord structure, and a call and response singing style originating in gospel. The second genre I leaned about was Blues. Blues is a genre originated by African Americans in the South of the United States around the late 19th century. This genre emerged from roots in African musical traditions. Blues included spirituals, work songs, field hollers, shouts, chants, etc. The third genre, which I found most interesting and amusing was Psychedelic. Psychedelic music was influenced by the 1960s psychedelic culture, a subculture of people who used drugs such as LSD, mushrooms and DMT to experience visual and auditory hallucinations and altered states of consciousness. Fourth was the rock genre. Rock music is a form of popular music that kindled from rock and roll and pop music during the mid and late 1960s.
